Cyberpunk 2077 Review: Does it deserve the hate?

Cyberpunk 2077 has come under fire MASSIVELY since its release, but is it really worth all the hate? I personally didn’t get caught up in all the hype. I watched the announcement in 2012, I watched the trailers, and I watched Keanu Reeves be breathtaking, but besides that I didn’t know anything about the game. I think it was very handy going into this game with a clean slate, and helped to not cloud my judgement through all the reviews. So here is what I think of the game, from a complete unknown perspective.

Lets get the negatives out of the way. Rendering can take a while in Night City. Sometimes you need to look at something, look away, then look back for it to fully load the graphics. Its not the smoothest way to operate, but its still a playable game. There are glitches that happen occasionally which honestly are more funny than game breaking. I’ve witnessed people falling through cars, aiming invisible guns at me, genitals poking through their shorts. Honestly, its been pretty hilarious. The game has crashed for me once every two to three hours, but with the ps5 loading times, it takes about 3 minutes to get to the exact same place as I previously was. Again, these are minor inconveniences that with be fixed through patches in the near future, so just enjoy them while you can get some hilarious screenshots from them.

Right, now with that out of the way, let’s get into the positives! First up, genital customizing! Not really; its Keanu Reeves, who does a fantastic job of acting his part. He needed to play the same character in multiple different ways and attitudes, depending on how you reacted to him. To be able to do that is a testament to the great actor he is.

The story line so far, has been captivating. Every time I play it, I don’t want to put it down. But of course, I’m barely into the story because I am too busy doing 400 side quests and exploring Night City.

The upgrades in the game are something that I dream of when I play games. You are able to customize, upgrade and create weapons. You are able to do almost the exact same thing on yourself too. I’m only on level 10, and I pretty much have the next 100 level upgrades planned out. The customization in this game is fantastic! There are things you can do on the fly, things you need to do a specific venues, things you buy, and things you unlock. This game is like a cross between Borderlands, Farcry, Skyrim, GTA and Deus Ex.

If anyone from CDPR reads this, I do have a couple of little grievances that would make this game instantly better! When driving, better brakes. Give us an E-brake!! I can’t turn properly and it does get annoying running over a whole sidewalk of people when I’m trying to be a good boy!

We need easier selling options. Let us mark our favourite items, as well as junk items. Then let us press a single button that gets rid of all of the selected trash in one swoop.

A fourth weapon slot would be fantastic as well. I’m not sure if one is unlocked later in the game, but in other similar games, I really enjoyed having quick select for pistol, shotgun, SMG, and sniper.

Overall, this game is 80 bucks. To me, that’s 2 visits to the cinema with my family. A movie goes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. I’ve played this game for 10 – 15 hours at this current moment and see myself getting a lot more hours in. People need to remember the entertainment value of it, and stop focussing on the negative things that will be fixed before you know it. 5 months ago, it was “STOP DELAYING THE RELEASE, IM ANGRY” and now it’s “YOU RELEASED AN UNFINISHED GAME, IM ANGRY”. Someone literally called me a child molester because I said that I enjoyed the game so far. People are waaaaaayyyyy to invested in a game that unfortunately didn’t live up to 8 freaking years of hype. That's a lot to live up to. No, its not a perfect game, but it is far from a bad game. My opinion? Buy the game. Or if you are an overly touchy person, wait 2 months and buy it then, when more patches have been released to make the game play smoother.

To me, a 7.5 out of 10, with the potential of a 9.5 out of 10 once everything runs smoother. I can see myself playing this for hours, and restarting the entire game once completed to try different tactics, builds, backgrounds and mannerisms.

Much love, enjoy the games that YOU like.
