The Epic Games Store snagged itself a massive game to give away to players for free this month – the one and only Grand Theft Auto 5. However, the team at Epic didn’t quite realise just how big of a game they’d managed to get, leading to the absolute destruction of the EGS as people rushed to claim their free game.
The company was forced to take to Twitter to respond to the unprecedented traffic, which saw many gamers unable to get their freebie due to the site’s total overload.
“We are currently experiencing high traffic on the Epic Games Store,” tweeted Epic.
“We are aware that users may be encountering slow loading times, 500 errors, or launcher crashing at this time and we are actively working to scale. We’ll provide an update as soon as we can…
“We understand that many users are unable to access the Epic Games Store at this time. We appreciate your patience as we continue to work towards a resolution to mitigate traffic.”
A fix was found, and players were able to get themselves GTA 5 with a lot less of the initial hassle.
If you’ve yet to get your copy, please note that this isn’t just GTA 5, it’s actually the game’s Premium edition, which includes GTA Online and “all existing gameplay upgrades and content.”
The description from the Epic Games Store reads as follows: “The Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition includes the complete GTAV story, Grand Theft Auto Online and all existing gameplay upgrades and content. You’ll also get the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, the fastest way to jumpstart your criminal empire in GTA Online.”
At the time of writing, traffic seems to be a lot more stable and you can now download your free copy of GTA 5 without issue.
